Everything You Want is the third studio album by Vertical Horizon, and the first major label effort with RCA Records. It was released in 1999. The first four tracks of the album were all released as singles. 'Everything You Want' became one of the most played singles of 2000, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 'You're a God' was also very popular, if not quite as much as 'Everything You Want'. These two singles had popular music videos made for them; the video for 'You're a God' featured actress Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. The album also served as the debut of bassist Sean Hurley in the band. Previous albums had a reasonably close balance of songwriting and singing duties between Matt Scannell and Keith Kane, but Everything You Want featured Scannell writing and handling lead vocals on ten of the eleven tracks.
'Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)' was covered by country singer Gary Allan on his 2005 album Tough All Over, from which his version was also released as a single.'Finding Me' was featured on the fifth Season opener of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.'Give You Back' was featuring in the first episode of Alias, 'Truth Be Told'.
'You're a God' was also featured in the 2003 film Bruce Almighty.

Writing and recording[edit]
Some of the songs that made the cut for EYW were performed regularly prior to the band entering the studio in 1998. Many fan recorded live shows from 1997 include 'We Are,' 'Send It Up' and 'You're A God,' while 'Shackled' was first performed live in 1996. Other regularly performed new material from this time not released on the album included 'The Glass Waltz' and 'Slow in Time.' According to Matt Scannell, the title track deals with unrequited love which Matt stated that '...I was in love with this girl, and she was just a broken person. She kept turning to everyone except me for love and acceptance, and I wanted so much to help her. I wanted to be the one to give her everything she wanted, but I couldn't. She just couldn't accept it from me, and it was that pain, that led me to creating the song.'[4]
Released and commercial success[edit]
The album was released on June 15, 1999.[5] The album's first single was We Are which managed to reach the Modern Rock Tracks chart and peaked at 21.[6] The album's second single was 'Everything You Want' and the song became a massive hit peaking at number 6 at the Modern Rock Tracks chart and peaking at number 1 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[7] The album peaked at number 40 at the Billboard 200 albums chart and number 3 at the Billboard top heatseekers chart.[8] 'You're a God' and 'Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)' were also hits, peaking at 23 and 58 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[8] The album sold 2 million copies in America and was a commercial success.[3]
